Introduction to Poetry by Billy Collins

This is a funny and accurate metaphor of learning (and teaching) poetry. We (think we) know poems have secrets and, as readers who are learning, instead of getting to know a poem, we try to beat the secret out of them.

That’s how it often feels, trying to understand poetry. When, really, no trying needs to be involved: a poem is a living, breathing thing and all you need to do is keep your eyes and ears and senses open, and it will take you to its meaning.
