Invisible Fish by Joy Harjo

The sea encompasses our beginning and end, when Chevy trucks will cover the seabed while we are going to the store. The fish of the beginning are invisible, only their impressions in the sand are left – we don’t know what they looked like and what they saw.

There is a lot of water in the poem, and dreams. Things that shift, move, change and can’t be grasped. But also heavy, tangible elements: rock, stone, trucks. Things that ground us to reality and the here and now. The form, prose poem, is also very “factual” and real. Whatever the invisible fish dreamed of, this is us now, stuck in this moment forever. We will never see the fish.
